"How we drink our water shows us what kind of society we are. I want my body and my society to reflect sustainable values, so I only drink disposable, plastic bottled water if there is absolutely no alternative." - Christiana Z. Peppard
If you read this blog, you probably are a big fan of the environment. Plastic water bottles do the environment an enormous disservice. They poison our water ways, liter our forests, and create a hazardous conditions for plants and animal life. Here some good reasons on why plastic water bottles are bad for the environment.

1. Plastic water bottles are NOT SUSTAINABLE!
These bottles use massive amounts of water and fossil fuels to be manufactured. The bottles are also not biodegradable. This leaves an enormous carbon footprint on the environment that we will suffer the consequences of in the future. Most water bottles aren't even recycled and sent to landfills. Even worse, they can be found in massive collections floating around our oceans.

2. Bottled water is just glorified tap water!
If you don't buy into the complicated marketing schemes of water bottle companies, you can see what the product really is. Glorified tap water! The worst part about this scheme is that they mark the price up way higher than what you pay for the water in your home. Not only are these companies doing a disservice to the environment, but they are also ripping you off! Studies also show that theses bottles of water may be unsafe to consume/

3. Many bottled waters contain toxins!
Companies may be using more BPA-free plastic, but there are still many problems associated with plastic water bottles. According to Christiana Z. Peppard, "... chemicals laced into plastic bottles are other chemicals that can seep out if bottles are exposed to heat or sit around for a long time. Some of these chemicals are possible endocrine disruptors". This means that you could possibly get cancer later in life from drinking water out of plastic bottles. It's not worth the risk!

Water is our most important resource on the planet. It is what we need to essentially survive. Without it, we will all perish rather quickly. Someday, wars will be fought over this resource. We have to preserve what we have. Frankly, I think it's rather disgusting what these companies are doing. They are taking advantage of our most precious resource. Dont' believe me look at what these experts have to say.

Expert testimonials and comments.

“There is no comparison with the environmental footprint of bottled water. Of course, the plastic footprint is the same as it is with other drinks which come in bottles. But that argument is disingenuous, because for bottled water the alternative isn’t soda, it’s tap water. And the environmental footprint of bottled water vastly exceeds the environmental footprint of cheap, high-quality tap water. It’s not even close." - Small Footprint Family
"In 2006, the equivalent of 2 billion half-liter bottles of water were shipped to U.S. ports, creating thousands of tons of global warming pollution and other air pollution. In New York City alone, the transportation of bottled water from western Europe released an estimated 3,800 tons of global warming pollution into the atmosphere. In California, 18 million gallons of bottled water were shipped in from Fiji in 2006, producing about 2,500 tons of global warming pollution." - Small Footprint Family
"Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to bio-degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. It is estimated that over 80% of all single-use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become "litter." Source: ValleyWater.org Recycling is only feasible in limited circumstances because only PET bottles can be recycled. All other bottles are discarded. Only 1 out of 5 bottles are sent to the recycle bin. Source: SunTimes U.S. landfills are overflowing with 2 million tons of discarded water bottles alone. Source: idswater.org It takes over 1.5 million barrels of oil to meet the demand of U.S. water bottle manufacturing. This amount of oil far exceeds the amount needed to power 100,000 for a year, which does not include fossil fuel and emissions costs of green house gases needed to transport the final product to market. Source: SunTimes It is estimated that actually 3 liters of water is used to package 1 liter of bottled water. " - Water Project

Why use a re-usable water bottle?

"Sipping from a reusable bottle could save a whopping $550.00 a year (one disposable plastic water bottle daily at its average cost) compared to a one-time $15-$25 investment.Reusable water bottles save fossil fuels. If you fill one disposable plastic bottle a quarter of the way up with oil, it’s the amount needed to make it. A family of four switching to reusable bottles would save 27 gallons of oil a year.Just one person switching to a reusable water bottle keeps 2,580 balloons of CO2 out of the air per year.Drinking from reusable water bottles can be safer then disposable bottles. For instance, a glass or stainless steel option won’t contain BPA, a harmful chemical used when making some plastics. Also, other chemicals from plastics cannot leach into your drinks. By switching to reusable, you’ll feel better about your commitment to the Earth… Plastics take centuries to decompose and release toxic byproducts into the atmosphere." - WildMint.com
